Mutale Falls in Makuya Reserve provides safari enthusiasts as true opportunity to get away from it all. With a network of roads for 4×4 vehicles, visitors to this reserve can explore to their heart’s content, or visit viewing points over the Luvuvhu Gorge, and relax at the side of the Mutale River near the potholes and Mutale Falls. Facing the setting sun, guests have an extraordinary view of the Mutale River below, and a wilderness area of baobabs. Makuya Reserve is unfenced from Kruger National Park, and is home to the Big 5, and especially well-known for magnificent birding.
Close to Kruger’s Pafuri Gate, visitors can also use Mutale Falls to access the famous Pafuri Drive along the Luvuvhu River for stunning game viewing experiences.
Accommodation & Dining
Mutale Falls Safari Camp has 5 safari tents on wooden decks, each with two ¾ beds. Linen, bedding and towels are provided as part of the tariff. There is a simple en-suite with flush toilet, basin and a hot-water shower.
The kitchen, dining and camp-fire facilities are communal, and give adventure travelers an ideal opportunity to get to meet and interact with other like-minded travelers. You will share a gas hob and camp fire for cooking, as well as fridge and freezer for storage of food. The necessary pots, crockery & cutlery are also supplied.
There is no electricity, and paraffin or solar lanterns are provided for light at night. If self-catering, don’t forget to bring firewood. While it is safe to drink, some people don’t like the taste of the local water, so you are advised to bring your own bottled drinking water. This is a malaria area, and the use of prophylactics is advised.

Accommodation includes linen & towels, with en-suite facilities (shower, toilet, and vanity.) There are solar lanterns in rooms and USB-solar charging facilities in the kitchen.
Self-catering includes facilities with gas cooker, fridge & freezer, cooking utensils, crockery & cutlery.
Directions from Makhado/Louis Trichardt
Take the N1 north towards Musina. Shortly after the Baobab Toll Gate, after 58 km, turn right onto the R525, towards Tshipise and the Pafuri Gate of the Kruger National Park (S22°38.393’ E29°55.175’). Drive for 111 km’s to Masisi, then turn right towards Mutale (S22°25.265’ E30°51.955’). After 6.7 km turn left at the African Ivory Route sign (S22°28.603’ E30°52.718’). After 9 km turn left at the four way-stop (S22°30.901’ E30°56.507’), just before entering Tshikondeni mine. After 4 km turn right onto a dirt road (S22°28.984’ E30°56.929’) and continue for 2.2 km to the gate of Makuya Park (S22°29.227’ E30°56.929’). From the gate take the fork to the left and follow the signage (S22°27.911’ E30°59.586’)( S22°27.694’ E31°01.579’)( S22°26.962’ E31°02.431’)( S22°26.213’ E31°03.162’), for 15 km, to the camp, (S22°25.637’ E31°03.282’).
NB: Whatever your GPS says – the only access into Mutale Falls is via the Main Gate near Tshikondeni. Other routes are inaccessible due to flooding over the past few years.
The total distance from Makhado is 206 km and driving time is about three hours.
The camp can be reached with a 2×4 vehicle. 4×4 driven SUV’s without off-road tyres and insufficient ground clearance are not suitable for the current road conditions.
